GreenPolicy360 Siterunner / SJS:

The original Mission Statement of the newly launched U.S. space program spoke of our planet and our responsibilities. GreenPolicy360's founder was fortunate, beginning in the 1960s, to listen to Congressman George E. Brown point to the NASA plan and explain how he saw Congress put into action the reality of a multi-year, coordinated, multi-agency program to achieve mission goals. The Congressman became a friend, then a colleague over the years. Until his death in 1999 Congressman George Brown led historic and essential first-generation US 'Big Science, Earth Science' programs and projects.

Earth science, measuring and monitoring Earth's life-enabling systems, environmental protection and security was given a highest priority. Representative Brown had become deeply involved in our student 'Earth Day' planning and he had direct access to the capabilities to make the Earth Day envisioning a reality. -- Earth Day Memories on the 50th Anniversary

George was a key mover in the launch of the EPA and he drafted the legislation establishing the first climate science programs.

George was among the first voices to be raised warning about the environmental threat of climate disruption and, although few realize, he was at the forefront of the initial efforts to study the climate, pushing the development of initial atmospheric science programs and missions of NASA and public/private research. He combined his engineering skills with his legislative reach.

George E. Brown, in fact, drafted the "National Climate Program Act" of 1978.

The Landsat's program, considered George's 'pet project' by many, was set in motion as a decades long, first-ever digital scanning remote satellites data collecting study. An array of satellites began to launch, creating and combining the expanding resources of NASA, USGS, NOAA, and what became vast educational and scientific institutions and aeronautics technology.

Over five decades of Atmospheric and Earth Sciences data is now available, as was the original intent back in the 1970s when the NASA missions to measure, monitor and then intelligently manage Earth Systems wereconceived, legislated, supported and set in motion...

Here's to the visionaries who made the Earth science missions and fact gathering a reality and foundation on which informed decisions can be made.

Forward to today...

Measuring and monitoring everyday

The NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL) pursues a broad and comprehensive understanding of the many physical, chemical and biological processes that comprise the Earth system to better predict their behavior from minutes to millennia on local to global scales.

Earth System Science

Earth system science (ESS) is the application of systems science to the Earth sciences. In particular, it considers interactions between the Earth's "spheres" — atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, geosphere, pedosphere, biosphere, and, even, the magnetosphere — as well as the impact of human societies on these components.

The Science Education Resource Center, Carleton College, offers the following description: "Earth system science embraces chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics and applied sciences in transcending disciplinary boundaries to treat the Earth as an integrated system. It seeks a deeper understanding of the physical, chemical, biological and human interactions that determine the past, current and future states of the Earth. Earth system science provides a physical basis for understanding the world in which we live and upon which humankind seeks to achieve sustainability".

Only shifts commensurate with the scale of our existential crises have any prospect of averting them. Hopeless realism, tinkering at the edges of the problem, got us into this mess. It will not get us out.

The Earth’s systems are highly complex, and complex systems do not respond to pressure in linear ways. When these systems interact (because the world’s atmosphere, oceans, land surface and lifeforms do not sit placidly within boxes that make study more convenient), their reactions to change become highly unpredictable. Small perturbations can ramify wildly. Tipping points are likely to remain invisible until we have passed them...

Only one of the many life support systems on which we depend – soils, aquifers, rainfall, ice, the pattern of winds and currents, pollinators, biological abundance and diversity – need fail for everything to slide...
