THE THIN BLUE LAYER

"All that stands between life on Earth and the cold, dark void of space."

The Earth's Atmosphere

Why blue? Atmospheric gases scatter blue wavelengths of visible light more than other wavelengths, giving the Earth’s visible edge a blue halo." At higher and higher altitudes, the atmosphere becomes so thin that it essentially ceases to exist, the life protecting blue fades to black.

“The Earth's atmosphere is an extremely thin sheet of air extending from the surface of the Earth to the edge of space... the thickness of the atmosphere is about 100 km" (62 miles) - approx 80 % of the atmosphere is the Troposphere, which varies between 4 and 12 miles thick... "If the Earth were the size of a basketball, the thickness of the atmosphere could be modeled by a thin sheet of plastic wrapped around the ball."

Isn't it time to secure our environment, to focus on the horizon, to carefully study (and protect) earth's life protecting systems -- take a look at the atmosphere, a closer look

Astronaut's who have seen and experienced the edge

See the extent of the atmosphere, surrounding us, not many miles high, enabling life as we know it...

"Earthshine"... The Space Station basking in blue Earthshine as the rising sun pierces our razor-thin atmosphere to cover the Space Station with blue light. I’ll never forget this place…seeing this makes the heart soar and the soul sing. - Astronaut Doug Wheelock

NASA Astronaut Reid Wiseman aboard the ISS: “I still have trouble comprehending that this impossibly thin blue curve keeps everything alive beneath it.” October 8th 2014

"Look at how thin our atmosphere is. This is all there is between humankind and deadly space." Astronaut Gerst, 2014
