Looking Back to the Origins of the US Green Party -- Looking Forward (as of 2016)
SJS / Siterunner
Posted a number of articles this week on the role of the Greens in "opening up debate" within the constrained US "duopoly", the dominant two-party system and restricted set of policy options and position that enter the political arena, whether domestic or foreign/national security policy.
Over the years, more and more of the US electorate is declaring themselves "independent" of the Democrats and Republicans. Polls track a steady upward trend over the past decades and currently indicate approximately 43% of American citizens consider themselves neither Democrat or Republican.
The current 2016 presidential campaign is likewise finding many commentators and media, political scientists and activists calling for opening up the the presidential debates to the two 'major-minor' independent parties -- the Green Party (www.gp.org) and the Libertarian Party (www.lp.org).
This opening up of the political system is what your siterunner has strived to achieve since the early 1990s.

“The goal of our founding platform was to have a Green Party policy foundation on which Green candidates could run ‘serious, credible, platform-based campaigns’, that is, to succeed in the goal of effective political campaigning taking the Green Party positions in the platform and turning them into reality.”

As I look back at the drafting of the U.S. Green Party's Key Values adopted formally as I presented them to the 2000 national Green Party Convention in Denver, along with the founding Green Party national platform, it remains for future greens, whether formally affiliated with the Green Party in the US or greens who share core values of Green parties to do their best in bringing the values and positions of green thought into reality.
The politics of the present era clearly demand the independent, future-oriented vision of green, environmentally focused 'planet citizens'...

From SJS to Charlene Spretnak:
"As the person who held a serious responsibility in redrafting the Key Values statement and changing the question format that came out of the 1984 Green meeting, I can say (and have said in numerous speeches, talks, articles and posts) that the Key Values are the values foundation on which we constructed our founding national Green Party Platform.... I often have explained our Green Key Values underpinning in speeches and in my writing over the years. The values of the Greens are a beginning point, an appropriate and a deeply held core set of beliefs that suffuse our platform... I was careful as I drafted platform language during these initial years and engaged with Greens in an extended process. I always pointed out the special, distinguishing role the Key Values hold..."

SJS: From the drafting of the Green Key Values with Charlene Spretnak's leadership in the early days of the US Greens to the proposing of a legal national party and the drafting of a new national platform approved in 2000 at the Nominating Convention at the Renaissance Center in Denver, through to near 200 pp filing with the Federal Election Commission and its approval of the US Green Party's legal standing as the Green national committe of a national party, the organizing work of dedicated Greens has led to a new era of Green Politics.

- Excerpt from the FEC Opinion:
- ... The Party has already undertaken significant party building activity of a national scope. The various party registration and get-out-the vote-activities, the holding of a national convention in 2000, as well as efforts to publicize the Party’s positions, indicate that the Green Party of the United States is engaging in activity comparable to other national party committees.
- ... These results compare favorably with other recent national committee situations. Considering these factors together, the Commission concludes that through the functions of its coordinating committee, the Green Party of the United States has manifested sufficient activity to qualify as the national committee of a political party for purposes of the Act and Commission regulations.
