Greening Our Blue Planet

Generation Green | Going Green

Flashback to the beginnings of the modern environmental movement ...

The 60's era was rightly known for its activist movements, from civil rights to the peace movement, to 'counter culture', social justice, and the beginnings of what would become a global environmental movement. Many of the threads for the green era began with the 'teach-ins' and the first Earth Day in 1970...

An Environmental Protection Era: Read the story about George E. Brown

George Brown on Saving the Environment (Omnibus Environmental Bill - 1969)

Representative George E. Brown, from East Los Angeles, was a key player in legislation founding the Environmental Protection Agency.

As the LA Times noted (without pomp or circumstance) in George's obituary in 1999: "He championed the creation of the federal Environmental Protection Agency". The creation of the EPA was in many ways Congressman George Brown's vision achieved..."

The EPA recalls the first Earth Day

American environmentalism dawned as a popular movement on a mild spring afternoon in 1970. Wednesday, April 22nd, brought blue skies, light breezes, and temperatures in the 60s to New York City and Washington, D.C. Much of the rest of the country enjoyed similar conditions. On that day, the influence of nature had particular meaning; the nation held a celebration of clean air, land, and water. Encouraged by the retreat of winter, millions participated.

The first Earth Day prompted, in part, by the recent moon landings. When the astronauts turned their cameras homeward, capturing first images of a blue planet, the world looked upon itself with awe and a new Whole-Earth understanding...

Climate Change - Global Warming Keyword-Terms

GreenPolicy360 Siterunner: The beginnings of modern environmental and climate science can be traced to the 1960s and 1970s. The U.S. National Academy of Sciences played a key role in laying a foundation of scientific reports and data.

George Brown proposed and drafted the legislation of the first U.S. National Climate Program and shepherded its passage in 1978.
