A Green New Deal for cars would be easier than you think
Via The Week / January 2019
• https://theweek.com/articles/815287/green-new-deal-cars-easier-than-think
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report last year stating that the world is quickly running out of time to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius, the level widely agreed to be the conservative, safety-first goal to prevent serious climate harms. To get there, the world would have to cut current emissions by 45 percent by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.
That sounds preposterously unlikely. Even 2 degrees of warming — which would be much worse than 1.5 degrees — would be nearly impossible to hit at this point (if we set aside hugely risky geoengineering schemes or untested carbon capture industries).... before we give in to despair, we should remember that the technology to address climate change is barreling along at high speed. The largest source of U.S. carbon emissions is transportation, and a Green New Deal for motor vehicles would be quite straightforward...

Tesla's Green Machines Proving the Naysayers Wrong
Via Forbes / October 28, 2018
Pretty much everything has been said about Tesla: it was selling vehicles at a loss and would never be able to make them under the right conditions and fast enough, that its founder was crazy and would lead the company to ruin, while one industry veteran acclaimed the Model S, calling on car collectors to buy one “before the company goes belly up.” But this quarter, Tesla has not only made tons of money, boosting its share price and giving the NASDAQ its best day in months, but has also fulfilled its production and distribution objectives, showing every sign of staying in the black, at least until it has to pay interest on loans in the first quarter of next year.
For once, this third quarter does not seem to be the exception: everything indicates the company has found a stable way to generate profits. What’s more, Tesla is no longer an industry quirk: many have laughed at its production difficulties, grossly underestimating the achievement of moving from a standing start to mass producing 80,000 vehicles per quarter, but the company is now outselling Porsche, Mercedes Benz and BMW, making it the best-selling domestically-made car in the United States, and what’s more with a model that while expensive, is more advanced technologically, as well as cheaper and much safer to run that its internal combustion powered competitors...

A/C Needs To Go Green for Energy Savings
WHAT is the single most effective way to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions? Go vegetarian? Replant the Amazon? The answer is: make air-conditioners radically better. On one calculation, replacing refrigerants that damage the atmosphere would reduce total greenhouse gases by the equivalent of 90bn tonnes of CO2 by 2050. Making the units more energy-efficient could double that. By contrast, if half the world’s population were to give up meat, it would save 66bn tonnes of CO2. Replanting two-thirds of degraded tropical forests would save 61bn tonnes. A one-third increase in global bicycle journeys would save just 2.3bn tonnes.
Air-conditioning is one of the world’s great overlooked industries. Automobiles and air-conditioners were invented at roughly the same time, and both have had a huge impact on where people live and work. Unlike cars, though, air-conditioners have drawn little criticism for their social impact, emissions or energy efficiency. Most hot countries do not have rules to govern their energy use.
Yet air-conditioning has done more than most things to benefit humankind....
Cutting the impact of cooling requires three things (beyond turning up the thermostat to make rooms less Arctic). First, air-conditioners must become much more efficient...
Next, manufacturers should stop using damaging refrigerants. One category of these, hydrofluorocarbons, is over 1,000 times worse than carbon dioxide when it comes to trapping heat in the atmosphere. An (updated) international deal to phase out these pollutants, called the Kigali amendment, will come into force in 2019. Foot-draggers should ratify and implement it; America is one country that has not done so.
Last, more could be done to design offices, malls and even cities so they do not need as many air-conditioners in the first place. More buildings should be built with overhanging roofs or balconies for shade, or with natural ventilation...
More than Air-Conditioning 'Add-ons'
Via Treehugger
- At the moment, only 8% of the 3bn people in the tropics have air-conditioning, compared with over 90% of households in America and Japan. But eventually, it will be near universal because so many trends are converging behind its spread: ageing, since old people are more vulnerable to heat stroke; urbanisation, since fields cannot be air-conditioned but offices and factories must be; and economic growth, since, after mobile phones, the middle class in emerging markets want fans or air-conditioners next.
There is a huge carbon footprint to running all this AC. “At current rates, Saudi Arabia will be using more energy to run air-conditioners in 2030 than it now exports as oil.” International Energy Agency (IEA) figures that running AC now produces 4 billion tons of CO2 annually or 12 percent of the total...
You can’t just add a box... It starts with urban design and goes right down to the detail of how you build a wall. We have to get away from boxes and think about overall systems, the bigger picture, or... we will be “cooking our planet to refrigerate the diminishing part that's still habitable."

Green and Healthy Streets
As mayors of some of the world’s great cities, we are committed to transforming them into greener, healthier, and more prosperous places to live. Our streets must be safe and accessible for everybody and our air must be clean and free from harmful emissions. This will improve the quality of life for all citizens, and help tackle the global threat of climate change.
We envision a future where walking, cycling, and shared transport are how the majority of citizens move around our cities. This shift towards zero emission mobility will result in less congestion and less pollution, while making our roads quieter and the air we breathe cleaner.
One third of greenhouse gas emissions from C40 cities come from transport and traffic is the biggest source of air pollution, globally responsible for up to one quarter of particulate matter in the air. As cities continue to grow they are becoming more congested, with people spending more time in traffic.
A study across the US, UK, France and Germany showed that congestion on our roads is costing the economy on average almost one percent of GDP. This is not only holding back our economies through lost time and productivity, but also harming our health and the environment through worsening air pollution. Recent data shows that dirty air leads to almost 4.5 million premature deaths a year and afflicts many more, particularly children, with illnesses such as asthma.
We are already delivering our vision of greener, healthier and more prosperous cities but we recognise the urgent need for ambitious climate action to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. We also recognise the need for a comprehensive, holistic approach to transform the way people travel around our cities that builds on pledges made as part of the C40 Clean Bus Declaration and supports those articulated in the Global MacroRoadmap: An Actionable Vision for Transport Decarbonization.
We pledge to transition to Fossil-Fuel-Free Streets by: 1) procuring, with our partners, only zero-emission buses from 2025 and 2) ensuring a major area of our city is zero emission by 2030.
To meet this commitment, we will:
• Transform our cities through people-friendly planning policies.
• Increase the rates of walking, cycling and the use of public and shared transport that is accessible to all citizens.
• Reduce the number of polluting vehicles on our streets and transition away from vehicles powered by fossil fuels.
• Lead by example by procuring zero emission vehicles for our city fleets as quickly as possible.
• Collaborate with suppliers, fleet operators and businesses to accelerate the shift to zero emissions vehicles and reduce vehicle miles in our cities.
• Publicly report every two years on the progress the cities are making towards these goals.

Way Out in Front: Driverless Technology
Automated Vehicles
- Ready or Not, It's Time to Go Green Driving
John Romano / Tampa Bay Times: A recent analysis done by Morgan Stanley asked rhetorically what would be the next $100 billion industry. The answer? Global mobility, i.e. autonomous cars, will be equal to 100 of the next $100 billion industries.
Here's a short and simplified version of how it changes the world:
Transportation will become a product that you use as needed. Instead of driving yourself everywhere and parking your car, you order an autonomous vehicle that drops you off wherever you're going.
Congestion on roads is eased because driverless cars will be more efficient. They'll take better routes, and drive closer to each other...
City planning will change because massive parking lots and garages will no longer be needed. Traffic accidents and fatalities will be greatly reduced, which will change trauma centers and law enforcement workloads. Auto insurance will have to adapt. Gas stations will go out of business as more cars become electric.
Think about how the world changed when automobiles were invented around the start of the 20th century.
Get ready ....

Smart Homes
- An Approaching Energy Revolution in the Home... and Office
IoT / Internet of Things
- Energy Efficiency
(2016) -- "Smart Home" is a generic definition of any residence that has appliances, lighting, heating, air conditioning, TVs, computers, entertainment audio & video systems, security, and camera systems that are capable of communicating with one another and can be controlled by computerized systems and remotely by a time schedule, from any room in the home, as well as remotely from any location in the world by phone or internet.
Installation of smart products give the home and its occupants benefits that technology and personal computing have brought since the 1980s. A 'smart systems' approach with homes and offices enables savings of time, money and energy. The add-on extensions to any style of home offer immense choice and variety -- from the most sophisticated, modern building to the hut with solar-power driving lighting at night so children can study and mobile phones can be charged.
Many 'smart home' products are currently available in one of four standard protocols (the means of communication between themselves) and all of these are compatible with the internet, phone, and cell phones. The protocol names of the current four systems are: X10, Z-Wave, UPB and EnOcean.
'Smart Products' that utilize the same protocol offer the ability to add products and hardware at a homeowners pace and budget. The system can grow to meet the needs of a changing families as time goes on. Products can be selected from various manufacturers, preventing expensive obsolescence or non-competitive pricing. Issues such as privacy, 'bugs' and 'hacks', 'malware' and 'viruses' are becoming increasingly serious and are being addressed in new security protocols.
○
An emerging important feature of a smart home is conservation of the earth's limited resources.
More and more people are becoming aware of the ability to make their homes truly smart — and green — by utilizing home controllers integrated with all home sub-systems to increase savings by controlling lighting, window coverings, HVAC, irrigation and by monitoring usage.
Many home controllers have built-in monitoring systems whereby they calculate and log usage by all connected devices, giving the home owner heightened awareness and the knowledge to make changes as necessary. These systems can even be accessed over the Internet from anywhere in the world so the homeowner can adjust consumption any time, anywhere.
New technologies can be designed to be naturally smart. For many cultures balance with nature was a truth, a deep wisdom passed from generation to generation. Today our lives and our homes can remember this wisdom with an eye to land contours, water flow, seasonal winds, the daily arc of the sun.
○
Natural traditions, such as Feng Shui, share a sense of environmental awareness.
Integral ecology remembers our place in and with our natural surroundings.
Natural design ideas, such as "solar gain" in alignment with the path of the sun in the placement of windows, are "going green" guides.
Give attention to the natural world as you build and improve your home.
Bring understanding of the natural world to all your work, ventures, and endeavors.
Celebrate being a planet citizen.
