Desertification is a type of land degradation in which a relatively dry land region becomes increasingly arid, typically losing its bodies of water as well as vegetation and wildlife. It is caused by a variety of factors, such as climate change and other human activities. Desertification is a significant global ecological and environmental problem.

Desertification and Climate Change
“Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert.”
- Desertification, exacerbated by climate change, represents one of the greatest environmental challenges of our times...
Desertification is associated with biodiversity loss and contributes to global climate change through loss of carbon sequestration capacity and an increase in land-surface albedo.
