SJS / GreenPolicy Siterunner: The 1992 Brown campaign was the first to employ the new Internet and the first to raise funds across the country focusing on individual donors and an 800 number that became both ubiquitous on the campaign trail and slighted by those accustomed to big donors comprising campaign financing.

The Brown campaign was successful in its fundraising and challenged the Clinton campaign and its big donor contributors.

The model employed by the Brown campaign staff would become, as the Internet grew, a new tool in campaign arsenals designed to compete with business-as-usual, money in politics. Modern US campaigns now, of necessity, look to the Internet and social media as a necessity and a possibility of changing the reliance of candidates on big donors.

Btw, as of 2016, Jerry Brown's original 800 number still works -- and callers are re-directed to the Office of the California Governor.
