The NASA Earth Observing System (EOS)
The Earth Observing System (EOS) is a program of NASA comprising a series of artificial satellite missions and scientific instruments in Earth orbit designed for long-term global observations of the land surface, biosphere, atmosphere, and oceans. Since the early 1970s, NASA has been developing its Earth Observing System, launching a series of Landsat satellites ... Following the launch of various satellite missions, the conception of the program began in the late 1980s and expanded rapidly through the 1990s.[2] Since the inception of the program, it has continued to develop, including; land, sea, radiation and atmosphere.[1] Collected in a system known as EOSDIS, NASA uses this data in order to study the progression and changes in the biosphere of Earth. The main focus of this data collection surrounds climatic science. The program is the centerpiece of NASA's Earth Science Enterprise.

Earth Observation System Data and Information System - NASA EOS
NASA's Earth Observation System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) comprises elements including Distributed Active Archive Centers, Science Investigator-led Processing Systems, and web infrastructure.
NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) is a key core capability in the Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) Program. It provides end-to-end capabilities for managing NASA Earth science data from various sources โ satellites, aircraft, field measurements, and various other programs.
For the EOS satellite missions, EOSDIS provides capabilities for command and control, scheduling, data capture and initial processing. These capabilities, constituting the EOSDIS Mission Operations, are managed by NASA's Earth Science Mission Operations (ESMO) Project. NASA network capabilities transport the data to the science operations facilities.
Update: See the Web Unification Project --
The Earth Observation System (EOS) is continuing to be updated with Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS)

And come along with us as we recall our long-time friend, Representative George Brown, who in his Congressional oversight role shepherded the Landsat program in its first three decades, and follow along with the genesis and ongoing, over five decades-long Landsat Earth Imaging Mission...
In 2016 the Landsat mission and its pioneering Earth Science from Space arriving at its 50th anniversary...
Steven Schmidt / GreenPolicy360 Siterunner:
Landsat was, and still is, an amazing 'open-access' historic accomplishment brought forward (and saved) by an East LA congressman who was a friend and a colleague for over 30 yrs... Thxs to the vision of two environmental visionaries, Stewart Udall and George Brown and the efforts of our many colleagues at NASA, NOAA, USGS, and the young student and teams at Caltech, MIT and the great American universities, men and women of all colors and talents, with shared values of achievement, persistence and overcoming challenges -- (see the story of Virginia Norwood!) -- we/humanity have, with the unique Landsat mission, a green success unrivaled in science and vision.
GreenPolicy360 siterunner is remembering and recalling how George followed on with Stewart Udall to imagine the EROS/Landsat mission and how the collaborative coast-to-coast grants/group/projects/programs/missions worked, year in, year out... The vision of the 60s and 70s carried forward with funding and support for Landsat and multiple Earth science achievements. Many of the satellite studies, imaging, and database archived results are now, years later, providing uniquely valuable records for use around the world. We look at Google Maps, and understand how key nextgen home planet imagery of the Landsat constellation is, benefiting all. -- What's Next? "Landsat 9"
Although George E. Brown is not known by many, he is vivid in our recollections of him beginning in the mid- and late 1960s -- George was saying we're going to build the Earth imaging program and we're going to launch not just an earth observation satellite, but a constellation and ongoing earth science and protection mission. George did what he promised to do and the Landsat program was born.
George E Brown led Earth Science from Space with his position on the oversight committees, in his drafted legislation, conducted hearings, coordinated research from science academic and research organization, and shaping Congressional support and votes for over 25 yrs.
๐
Here's to George's dream with Landsat, still flying, still mapping, still bringing us the science, facts, data, tracking the change in Earth's life systems, landscape to landscape, region by region, nation to nation, across our home planet ... We're all in this ride together on our dynamic-changing Planet Earth ...
Celebrating Earth's Beauty via Landsat
Read about George E. Brown & Landsat at GreenPolicy360:
Here's more about Landsat as described at GreenPolicy360:
Steven Schmidt: One of the most consequential science missions in US history successfully launched a 9th generation Landsat Earth Imaging satellite. I am fortunate to be one of a few who watched earth science 'big science' missions of NASA come into existence with the efforts of Congressman George E. Brown, who was instrumental in creating, shepherding, and protecting earth- and atmospheric-science programs as they began. The US Representative from Los Angeles knew, and I heard his reasoning, that we needed good data, facts, science to guide our, i.e, the nation's policy decisions. George, on the main oversight committees, took on an activist role. NASA and a range of educational/university programs stepped up and created the first-generation beginning that we now have as data banks/baselines/earth system changes that are being measured and monitored in ways to guide political policy makers on climate, resources, protecting our life enabling 'thin blue layer' (www.thinbluelayer.com). Rep. George E. Brown (from East LA) went on offense to move the programs/missions forward and then defense to keep politicians such as Ronald Reagan who moved to zero out and kill the Landsat program. Although I've often said that not many know or care about visionaries like George Brown, I have also often said visionaries-activists were essential in the 70s/80s/90s in giving our generation the tools and a knowledge base to deal with generational and intergenerational environmental challenges and crisis.
Here's a tip of our #GreenPolicy360 hat to Landsat and those who made and are continuing to make big science, earth science real to guide us as we go...

Google Maps introduces #Earth360 imagery
June 27, 2016
>Three years ago we introduced a cloud-free mosaic of the world in Google Earth. Today weโre rolling out an even more beautiful and seamless version, with fresh imagery from Landsat 8 satellite and new processing techniques for sharper images than ever before. Satellite images are often cloudy, but not always over the same place, so we looked at millions of images and took the clearest pixels to stitch together this cloud-free and seamless image.

>This new imagery of the earth from space virtually eliminates clouds, includes refreshed imagery for regions of the world where high-resolution imagery is not yet available, and offers a more comprehensive and accurate view of the texture of our planet's landscape.

The images in 'A Beautiful Planet' are so incredible that its narration can feel like an afterthought. But this IMAX Entertainment production, made in cooperation with NASA, presents an impassioned and very persuasive message for advancing beyond fossil fuels.
Shot over two years and covering three space-station expeditions, A Beautiful Planet captures Earth in scenes of indescribable grandeur. A typhoon 300 miles wide fills the IMAX frame. Lightning dots a nighttime sky while aurora borealis glows on the horizon. The Caribbean positively shines under a full moon.
Director Toni Myers begins the movie by zooming into and through the Milky Way, singling out our sun, an ordinary star among millions. The enormity of the universe emphasizes how precarious our place on Earth is, how unusual the circumstances are to harbor life.
Close to two-thirds of the planet's surface is covered with water.
The blues and greens of oceans and lakes shimmer under the lenses of the astronauts' cameras (digital, a first for an IMAX space movie)...
Astronauts like Samantha Cristoforetti from Italy show viewers what it's like to live on a space station for months at a time. Drinking espresso, cutting hair, taking a "shower" become complicated procedures. Even celebrating Christmas takes ingenuity.
A shrinking glacier in Greenland in time-lapse photography... deforestation in Madagascar... Plumes of smoke extend for miles across empty fields that used to be rainforest in Brazil.
The movie accepts climate change as a given, and insists that we move from fossil fuels to renewable
Astronaut Cristoforetti suggests that we think of ourselves as crew members on a space ship instead of passengers, so that we can accept responsibility for protecting the planet. It's a message that should resonate with viewers of all ages.
A Beautiful Planet is more than just pretty pictures. Thoughtful and encouraging, it could change how viewers think about climate change.
