RESOLUTION NUMBER R-296025
WHEREAS, local governments have direct influence over land use, transportation, building construction, purchasing decisions, waste management, and water and energy conservation; and
WHEREAS, local policy can influence the ability of future generations to enjoy economic resilience, environmental stewardship, and civic opportunity, which are three components of a sustainable community; and
WHEREAS, Climate Change is one of the most pervasive issues facing today’s and future generations, affecting human heath, economic security, and biodiversity; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Diego has agreed to join the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign, sponsored by the International Council for Local Environmental initiatives and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Diego has avoided a cumulative total of approximately $15 million in expenses as a result of measures taken by the City during 1994-2001 to institute projects such as energy conservation and renewable energy projects, transportation efficiencies, alternative fuel decisions, and waste management improvements, and has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 836,000 tons of CO2; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Diego pledges to further develop a Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Action Plan with a target of 15% reduction from projected 2010 levels; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Diego will monitor and verify emission reductions;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the City of San Diego, that the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign will be added to the City’s portfolio of programs that help to create a legacy of a city worthy of affection for many generations to come.
