RESOLUTION NO. RS2007-41
A resolution proclaiming November 14, 2007, as Diabetes Day in Nashville, Tennessee.

WHEREAS, November 14th is proclaimed as Diabetes Day in Nashville, Tennessee, a day set aside to raise public awareness of diabetes and its related complications; and

WHEREAS, diabetes is a chronic, debilitating and costly disease that affects more than 400,000 persons in Tennessee and 20.8 million people nationwide; and

WHEREAS, diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood and can strike children at any age, including pre-school children and even toddlers; and

WHEREAS, according to Centers for Disease Control & Prevention that estimate the number of Tennesseans with diabetes has nearly doubled over the past decade; and

WHEREAS, the city of Nashville and its medical institutions are committed to fighting this deadly disease through research, patient care, drug development and awareness; and

WHEREAS, the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance is sponsoring a national conference, "Diabetes Health Disparities," November 12-13 in Nashville and this conference is bringing together leading diabetes experts from across the country to discuss the next steps for fighting diabetes; and

WHEREAS, Tennessee is making a major commitment to battling the growing problem of Type 2 diabetes through ProjectDiabetes, which includes programs to combat the disease early in life and grants for innovative education, prevention, and treatment of diabetes and obesity; and

WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that the Metropolitan Council proclaims November 14, 2007, to be Diabetes Day in Nashville, Tennessee and urge all Tennesseans to help fight this disease and its life-threatening complications by increasing awareness of the risk factors for diabetes, making healthy lifestyle choices and by providing care and treatment to those suffering from diabetes.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE METROPOLITAN GOVERNMENT OF NASHVILLE AND DAVIDSON COUNTY:

Section 1. The Metropolitan Council hereby goes on record as proclaiming November 14, 2007, as Diabetes Day in Nashville, Tennessee.

Section 2. This Resolution shall take effect from and after its adoption, the welfare of The Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County requiring it.
