RESOLUTION NO. 2008-16
A RESOLUTION of the City Council of the City of Lakewood, Washington, expressing support for the creation of on an off-leash dog park within the City of University Place.

WHEREAS, the only off leash park for dogs in Pierce County is at Fort Steilacoom Park in the City of Lakewood; and

WHEREAS, the off leash dog area within Fort Steilacoom Park is so popular that it draws from throughout the South Puget Sound region suggesting the need for an additional off leash dog park in Pierce County; and

WHEREAS, the neighboring City of University Place is planning such an off leash dog park in the future; and

WHEREAS, SUNDogs (Safe, Unleashed and Natural), a volunteer group, is willing to pursue development of the off leash park but needs support in order to move development forward this year; and

WHEREAS, during the planning and creation of its off-leash park, the City of Lakewood enjoyed the support and cooperation of the City of University Place as this neighboring City recognized that value of such a facility to its citizens; and

WHEREAS, the City of Lakewood benefits from an additional dog park in Pierce County by reducing the impact on the Fort Steilacoom Park off leash area and providing a nearby park Lakewood citizens could enjoy,

NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD, WASHINGTON, HEREBY RESOLVES, as follows:

Section 1. That the City Council expresses its support for the Pierce County Executive and Pierce County Council to work together with the SUNDogs group to create an off leash dog park on the Chambers Creek Properties site this year.

Section 2. This Resolution shall be in full force and effect upon passage and signatures hereon.
