Brisbane Active Transport Strategy: Walking and Cycling Plan 2005-2010

Introduction
Brisbane Active Transport Strategy: Walking and Cycling Plan 2005-2010 is the document that outlines the steps that Council is taking to increase walking and cycling in Brisbane.

To achieve the objectives of this strategy Council is working on the following:

1. Infrastructure - Providing an inter-connected network of pedestrian pathways and bikeways that are safe, convenient and that many people can access.
2. Education and encouragement - Promoting walking and cycling as attractive means of transport and recreation by stressing their availability and the environmental, economic and health benefits of these activities.
3. User safety and personal security - Creating a comfortable and safe walking and cycling network.
4. Integrated transport programs and projects - Integrating walking and cycling into transport planning processes.
5. Integration with public transport - Integrating walking and cycling with public transport to increase its patronage and relieve road network congestion.
6. Mid-journey and end-of-trip facilities - Providing mid-journey and end-of-trip facilities, like locker rooms and showers, to encourage more people to walk and cycle.
7. Land use planning - Integrating walking and cycling into land use planning to create spaces that facilitate and encourage increased 'active transport'.
8. Other clean and green transport modes - Encouraging all active, healthy and environmentally friendly forms of transport.

The plan also proposed an investment strategy which, together with Brisbane's Transport plan, aims to achieve a 15% of all trips by walking and 8% of all trip by cycling in Brisbane by 2016. Download the plan
