Description:

UC San Diego plans to install a 1.2-megawatt fuel cell power plant by December 2008. This project is funded by private-sector partnerships and state-funded incentives.

Powered by methane gas, the plant will reduce UCSD’s annual utility costs by 8% compared to grid-supplied electricity.

Fuel cells:

  • Produce very low emissions
  • Generate power for campus electrical needs
  • Supply thermal energy for campus cooling needs
  • Can possibly power alternative fuel vehicles
