Resolution No. 263
Launching The Educational And Promotional Effort To Encourage The Use Of “ICE” (In Case Of Emergency) Telephone Numbers In Cell Phone Phonebooks

WHEREAS, following an accident or in the event of an emergency, or when someone requires medical attention or assistance, they may be unable to respond to emergency medical service providers during moments when time is critical, and

WHEREAS, individuals often have medical conditions or medications that they take the knowledge of which could assist Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Technicians in providing prompt and proper care to those in need, and

WHEREAS, the public does not usually carry with them their updated medical information or use medical alert bracelets, but many people carry cell phones, and

WHEREAS, cell phones can contain emergency contact information so that a person can be designated as a contact and would possess up-to-date knowledge of any medical problems or medications being taken, and

WHEREAS, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) technicians and first responders can be trained to look for information which would assist them in providing proper care to those in need and an “In Case of Emergency” or “ICE” telephone number in the cell phone’s phonebook would allow first responders to call a person who could provide such needed information and assistance, and

WHEREAS, the Criminal Justice/Public Safety/STOP DWI Committee has met and reviewed said request with a majority of the members voting approval.

RESOLVED, that anyone with a cell phone is hereby encouraged by the Ulster County Legislature to incorporate into their cell phone phonebooks one or more “ICE” entries whereby emergency contact information can be stored, and

FURTHER RESOLVED, that Ulster County Emergency Communications and all local Emergency Service Providers be requested to include this information as part of their educational programs throughout the County, and

FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ulster County Emergency Communications/Emergency Management and that they be requested to disseminate this further to all local emergency service providers, and moves its adoption.
