SJS: Recalling the beginnings of the U.S. Green Party

Although the U.S. Green Party has changed far from its founding platform and Green values, its policies and positions, here '''Green Horizon Magazine''' looks back at the origins of the Green Party.

John Rensenbrink speaks of those who did the organizing and those who attempted to block the organizing.

Engaged, positive Green Party politics, coalition building, far reaching progressive solutions remain far off as the cooption of the U.S. Green Party by an ideological cadre has become an ongoing problem blocking constructive green political action.

Steven Schmidt

Steve promoted and ably defended the creation of the Association of Green State Parties in the early days of the nascent U.S. Green Party. In 1995 at a national gathering of Greens in New Mexico, he presented the "40-State Green Organizing Effort," a strategic plan that included a presidential campaign by state parties with a convention to be held in Los Angeles. The proposal was accepted and state parties moved forward with national organizing based on his plan. Steve chaired a new Platform committee from 1995 to 2001, during which time he structured and drafted a significant amount of the founding platform (which can be found at https://www.greenpolicy360.net/w/Category:Green_Platform). The official, founding U.S. Green Party Platform was an integral part of the subsequent successful submission to the FEC for national committee/party status.
