RESOLUTION NO. 2004-09
A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING THE CITY OF ASHLAND AS A PARTNER IN THE CITIES FOR CLIMATE PROTECTION CAMPAIGN, SPONSORED BY THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL FOR LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES (ICLEI).

Recitals:

A. A scientific consensus has developed that carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere have a profound effect on the Earth's Climate, and

B. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS) reviewed and confirmed the consensus of the environment and public health communities and declared global warming a real problem to vulnerable populations, and

C. Local Governments significantly influence the Communities energy use by exercising key powers over land use, transportation, construction, waste management, and energy supply and management.

THE CITY OF ASHLAND RESOLVES AS FOLLOWS:

SECTION 1. The City of Ashland commits to participate in the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign and, as a participant, pledges to take a leadership role in promoting public awareness about the causes and impales of climate change.

SECTION 2. The City of Ashland will undertake the Cities for Climate Protection program five milestones to reduce both greenhouse gas and air pollution throughout the community, and also requests assistance from the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) Cities for Climate Protection Campaign to accomplish the milestones.

SECTION 3. This resolution takes effect upon signing by the Mayor.
