At the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1972, the Convention on Biological Diversity treaty was produced.

By 2007 the treaty had been ratified by 190 nations.

Data assembled by thousands of scientists and organizations working with the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) "provide insight into how much has gone missing in recent years owing to human impacts and help gauge the level of ongoing threats."

So far only about 50,000 species out of millions have been assessed.
