Western Governors University

Siterunner: In the mid 1990's I was asked to join the working group that was charged with the task of establishing a 'virtual university' throughout the western United States. The governors of these states joined together, as the new internet spread and 'distance learning' became a possibility. Especially in rural counties with great distance between towns, and newly wired schools, the concept of learning programs delivered via computer became highly attractive.

Our working group responded expeditiously and established the "Western Governors University". As the representative of the state of New Mexico, I look back with a sense of accomplishment (and cartons of start-up memories and material!)

Our online U has become, over the years, very successful and one of the largest of distance learning institutions. The WGU is now in every state and providing education skill sets for the 21st century.
