RESOLUTION NO. 0679-07
Resolution urging the Congressional Human Rights Caucus to support legislation condemning the Islamic Republic of Iran for its Government-Sanctioned policy of Executing Gay and Lesbian Iranians and calling on Tehran to adopt a more tolerant culture between Gay and Lesbian Iranians and Greater Iranian Society

WHEREAS, It is the duty of all governments, democratically elected or otherwise, to ensure that human and civil rights are equally protected and administered among all its citizens; and

WHEREAS, The Islamic Republic of Iran has an egregious human rights record in regard to its gay and lesbian community as documented by international, non-governmental organizations such as Amnesty International and Human rights Watch; and

WHEREAS, Since 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran has silently approved the public execution of gay and lesbian Iranians, upholding the death penalty for any homosexual activity because it is not permitted by Islamic Law; and

WHEREAS, Iranian contempt towards its gays and lesbians was made evident in a recent interview between Iranian and British parliamentarians, wherein Iranian parliamentarian Mohsen Yahyavi said that gays deserve to be executed or tortured and possibly both; and

WHEREAS, International gay rights groups believe that more than 4,000 lesbians and gay men have been executed since the Iranian Revolution of 1979, while the United States government and others have kept quiet on the matter; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco hereby urge the California Congressional Delegation to support legislation condemning Iran's heinous and degenerate treatment of gay and lesbian citizens; and, be it

FURTHER RESOLVED, That the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco hereby urge the Congressional Human Rights Caucus to demand that the Islamic Republic of Iran work to foster tolerance between gay and lesbian Iranians and Greater Iranian Society and for Tehran to improve the civil rights of gay and lesbian Iranians.
