Description:
The Bay County Citizens' Academy is a six (6) week program designed for residents of Bay County. The Academy provides residents with the information, resources and tools to become knowledgeable of county government and its duties. Sessions will be conducted by county staff with expertise in areas of interest.
Objectives:
To provide relevant information and materials that will enable citizens to understand how the departments that make up local government serve the public and understand the processes involved.
Program Description:
The Bay County Citizens' Academy is a six (6) week program. Each session is three (3) hours, from 5:00 - 8:00 PM, each Thursday evening, culminating in a graduation ceremony/reception at a regularly scheduled Bay County Commission meeting. Sessions will include presentations by departments similar to the new commissioners/county manager orientation. The Community Outreach Office will provide booklets to each participant of each departments' issue papers.
The Budget Office, Development Services, Maintenance Support, Parks & Recreation, Transportation, IT & GIS Services, Public Works, Utility Services, and Emergency Services will give presentations. Presentations will be held in the respective departments' building.
At the conclusion of the course participants will have an increased understanding of the organizational culture and operations of the various county departments that impact the quality of life in Bay County.
Admission:
Class size will be limited to fifteen (15) participants. Admission will be on a first come, first serve, basis. Applicants must be eighteen (18) years of age or older. Classes will begin promptly at 5:00 PM. A waiting list will be created from the accepted applications. The class activities will be coordinated by the Community Outreach Office.
