RESOLUTION 07-11676
A RESOLUTION APPROVING ENDORSING THE U.S. MAYORS CLIMATE PROTECTION AGREEMENT MEETING THE KYOTO PROTOCOL CLIMATE PROTECTION TARGETS TO REDUCE GLOBAL WARMING POLLUTION; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

WHEREAS, the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, which has been signed by just under 500 mayors, provides for mayors to meet the Kyoto Protocol targets in their local communities, urge state and federal governments to meet those targets, and urge Congress to pass greenhouse gas reduction legislation to reduce global warming pollution; and

WHEREAS, the Agreement also includes a number of recommendations for cities to take, such as reducing sprawl, preserving open space, creating walkable communities, promoting bicycle trails and public transit, increasing the fuel efficiency of city fleets, increasing recycling, promoting tree planting, and educating children, professionals, businesses, and industries; and

WHEREAS, the global temperature is warming and sea levels are rising, which has implications for Naples;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF NAPLES, FLORIDA:

Section 1. That the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement is hereby approved providing for the City of Naples to take positive actions to reduce the effects of greenhouse gases.

Section 2. The Mayor is hereby authorized to execute the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, a copy of which is attached hereto.

Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption.
