Description:
At noon on Friday 24 July 2009 Tasman District Council’s Recycling in Public Places initiative will be launched outside the Motueka Museum, High Street, Motueka.
The aim of this initiative is to establish a network of easily recognisable recycling bins in well used locations across the district, encouraging and enabling tourists and locals to recycle when they are out and about.
Tasman District Council, with funding from the Ministry for the Environment, will be providing the recycling bins at the following sites across:
- i-sites: Motueka, Nelson, Takaka, Murchison
- Rugby Club, Richmond
- High Street Motueka, Commercial Street Takaka, Sundial Square Richmond, Tasman Street Collingwood
- Nelson airport
Mayor Richard Kempthorne, who will host the ceremony says, “We hope these bins will soon become a fixture throughout the whole district. By placing the new bins in high usage areas Council is demonstrating a commitment to recycling and environmental sustainability.”
Local MP, Chris Auchinvole and Hon Dr Nick Smith, the Minister for the Environment, will also be present at the launch ceremony and will talk about the scheme and waste minimisation. The Green Group from Parkland School will follow their speeches with a demonstration of why it recently won the Nelson/Tasman Schools Zero Waste Challenge.
The LoveNZ bins will be officially launched by Anita Newport from Parkes Automotive who donated the bin at the Motueka High Street site.
David Stephenson, Tasman District Council Utilities Asset Engineer says, “We encourage people in Motueka to come and join us at this launch on Friday. We hope that all the bins around the district attract the attention of locals and visitors alike and help keep Tasman a beautiful, clean and sustainable place for everyone”.
LoveNZ bins have been installed throughout New Zealand as part of a nation wide campaign funded by the Ministry for the Environment.
