Ordinance No 2004 - 05
PURCHASE OF WIND GENERATED ELECTRICITY

WHEREAS, Cities play a vital role in encouraging and rewarding the development and use of renewable energy and promoting the efficient use of energy; and

WHEREAS, Such actions help reduce pollutants that produce greenhouse gases and global warming; and

WHEREAS, The air quality in the Washington regional severely exceeds national air quality standards for ground-level ozone; and

WHEREAS, Takoma Park has an opportunity to purchase Wind Energy Credits from WindCurrents, to offset a portion of the traditionally generated electricity the City uses to power City facilities and street lights; and

WHEREAS, Wind generated electricity produces no hazardous emissions; and

WHEREAS, WindCurrents has offered their Wind Energy Credits, which are nationally certified by the Green-e program, for the price of 1.1 cents per kilowatt hour for up to 900,000 kilowatt hours for the City’s purchase this year; and

WHEREAS, Takoma Park’s annual electricity consumption is approximately 1,773,000 kilowatt hours.

WHEREAS, The Takoma Park City Council has committed to buying a portion of the City’s electricity from renewable sources in future years in an amount exceeding the 5% available through the Montgomery County cooperative contract for electricity.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF TAKOMA PARK, MARYLAND

SECTION 1 THAT, the Takoma Park City Council directs the City Manager to negotiate a contract for the purchase of Wind Energy Credits from WindCurrents; and

SECTION 2 THAT, amount of wind energy purchased will be equivalent to100% of the City’s annual electricity consumption for facilities or 783,500 kilowatt hours; and

SECTION 3 THAT, funds to cover this purchase in the amount of EIGHT THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED AND EIGHTEEN DOLLARS, will come from budget account 9000- 7010.
