Hauraki District Council
Domestic Violence Policy
1. TITLE:
Hauraki Domestic Violence Policy 2007.
2. OBJECTIVE:
In 2006, Hauraki District Council was presented with a Violence Free Charter
as part of the Hauraki Community Plan 2006-16 consultative process. The
presenters of this submission felt that the issues of domestic violence were
significant enough in the Hauraki District that Hauraki District Council needed
to take on a greater leadership and advocating role to help reduce domestic
violence in the area.
Elected Members approved this Charter and have taken on board the vision to Create Violence Free Hauraki and resolved to develop a formal policy on creating a Violence Free Hauraki.
3. POLICY:
- Hauraki District will take an active role in advocating that Domestic Violence is not acceptable in the Hauraki District Community.
- Hauraki District will work in conjunction with external Domestic Violence Service provider agencies, where appropriate, in a supporting function to help raise awareness of the unacceptability of domestic violence, the impact domestic violence has on individuals and their families; and methods to reduce domestic violence in the Hauraki Community.
4. RELEVANT LEGISLATION:
This policy is voluntarily developed by Hauraki District Council and not required
by any statute.
5. RELATED HDC POLICIES/STRATEGIES OR GUIDELINES:

6. DEFINITIONS:
Domestic Violence: Domestic violence is a general term to describe a range
of behaviour often used by one person to control and dominate another with
whom they have, or have had, a close or family relationship and in which the
abuser operates from a position of perceived power. Domestic violence can
take place against the elderly or against children - it can take place in any form
of close relationship regardless of gender or age of either the victim or the
defendant.
Violence Free Charter: The Hauraki Violence Free Charter is a high-level set of principles to guide the Hauraki community towards actions that seek a violence free community.
Domestic Violence Service Provider: Agency or staff member of an agency that primarily or exclusively provides comprehensive services to victims of domestic violence.
7. AUDIENCE:

The whole Hauraki community is affected as any form of domestic violence
affects the social wellbeing of the individuals concerned. The repercussions of
the effects on the individual not only affect families and work places but also
future generations.
