Description:
Land Stewardship Services
The Land Stewardship Program at the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute cooperates with private landowners, businesses, public agencies and tribal governments to assist with environmental protection and restoration. Using an interdisciplinary approach and teams of Northland College faculty, staff and students assist in determining the capabilities of the land in order to develop more sustainable management goals.
Land Stewardship staff members use a community-based resource management approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of all physical and biological landscape components, including human communities. We recognize that involving local stakeholders results in more relevant solutions that take into account each community’s unique social, economic and environmental conditions and values.
We are currently working to enhance ecosystems by consulting and implementing services regarding water quality, natural resource management, and low impact development. Our projects include:
- Little Muskeg Wetland Restoration
- Roy Johnson's Wetland Monitoring and Maintenance
- St. Claire Street Stormwater Basin
- Cable Lakes Monitoring and Shoreline Restoration
- Coastal Wetland Monitoring
- Northland Pathway
- Sigurd Olson Memorial Forest
- Native Landscaping
- Chequamegon Bay Clean Beach Challenge
- Bay City Creek Restoration and Protection
- AmericInn Landscape and Stormwater Basin
- Ashland and Washburn Community Urban Forestry
- Proposed Wal-Mart Stormwater Bioretention Pond and Landscaping
- Northland College Native Landscaping
