Description:

Creative City - Task Force Mandate
Chaired by Controller Gord Hume, the Creative Cities Task Force formed in September 2004 was comprised of individuals from the cultural sector who shared a concern about and a commitment to improving London's future growth and development. To assist the Task Force, the City has also put together a Creative City Working Group representing many of London's top leaders in the cultural sector. Its mandate included:

  • studying the City of Toronto "Culture Plan for the Creative City"
  • considering work that has previously occurred in London
  • determining how London can assume a greater role and a more aggressive approach to assisting, developing, enhancing and championing a goal and a strategy to help London become a leader in mid-sized cities in North America
  • changing the way London "thinks"
  • making London a "creative city"

The Task Force met as a group and consulted with the public several times from October 2004 through January 2005. The Task Force's final report was presented to the public meeting of the City of London's Board of Control on Wednesday, April 27, 2005. The Creative City Task Force Meeting Notes are available for review.

Questions considered by the Creative City Task Force

Below are some of the questions the Creative City Task Force considered:

  • What will motivate young bright creative minds to stay in our City?
  • What will attract young bright creative minds to our City?
  • How do we inspire the community as a whole to take ownership in making London a more creative city?
  • What other Canadian cities should we model our efforts on and why?
  • What would you like to see as on (overall, community-based) outcome of the Creative Cities initiative?
  • What are some of the key success factors to making London a creative city?
  • Conversely, what are some of the barriers?
  • Identify positive creative initiatives currently underway that we can build on
  • Is the creative community in London a cohesive one or does it function in silos?
  • Where are the opportunities for increased collaboration/cohesion?
  • What is the role of economic development in building a creative city?
  • What are some current opportunities to do this?
  • What steps can the City take to become an internationally recognized medium sized creative city?
  • What can our community and our private sector do to improve the quality of life indicators of our City?
  • Specifically, what can be done to promote positive growth of our technological, cultural, social and ethnic environments?
  • How do we inspire the community as a whole to protect its natural and built heritage?
