Resolution No. 04-123

Whereas, current research indicates that exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life provides children with the most complete form of nutrition and supports optimum growth and development; and

Whereas, all available knowledge indicates that human milk optimally enhances the well-being of the infant by providing protection against specific infection and allergies and promotes maternal-infant bonding; and

Whereas, breastfeeding is associated with a lower risk of chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and asthma later in life; and

Whereas, breastfeeding enhances a child’s cognitive development thus leading to improved academic performance in later years; and

Whereas, breastfeeding is recognized by major medical organizations, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Dietetic Association, the National Association of WIC Directors, UNICEF and WHO as the preferred method of infant feeding and is supported by them throughout the early years of life; and

Whereas, the families of Yolo County need reliable sources of information to make informed and educated choices about the care and feeding of their infants; and Whereas, the theme of “Exclusive Breastfeeding: The Gold Standard-Safe, Sound, and Sustainable” focuses on helping people worldwide to understand the importance of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life.

Now, therefore be it resolved that the Board of Supervisors of Yolo County, do hereby proclaim the month of August 2004 as World Breastfeeding Month and urge all citizens to join us in supporting breastfeeding as a high priority for healthier babies in our County.
