Description:
The Community Gardens at the Evergreen State College is a Student Activities group dedicated to providing gardening space to members of the Evergreen and greater Olympia communities. Supported by student fees it also provides gardening tools, seeds, watering equipment, common areas, and access to informational materials. The group also organizes workshops, work-parties, and other activities emphasizing organic and ecologically-conscious farming practices and the importance of local food systems. The group aims to form a strong and supportive community of gardeners in which we all learn, teach, and grow.
Founded in 1982, the Community Gardens spent eighteen years on the site of what is now Demeter’s Permaculture Garden, moving into its new location just to the south in 2000. The Community Gardens has over fifty 12’x12’ plots available to anyone in the area. Evergreen community members are asked to pay a $10 fee, and Olympia community members are asked to pay $20. This money helps cover operating costs for the Gardens, such as purchasing seeds, tools, equipment, and gardening literature. Gardener registration will begin March 1st.
