RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2005, AS THE CITY OF OAKLAND'S SECOND ANNUAL CARFREE DAY TO ENCOURAGE TRANSPORTATION ALTERNATIVES TO DRIVING ALONE

WHEREAS, surveys indicate that 30 percent of Americans would prefer a less cardependent lifestyle¹ and

WHEREAS, decreased auto-dependent commuting can off-set the rising costs of gasoline, reduce obesity and associated health problems, and alleviate air pollution traffic congestion, among other benefits to Oakland's citizens; and

WHEREAS, walking, bicycling, carpooling and public transit are convenient options to driving alone to work in Oakland and the Bay Area, and

WHEREAS, CarFree Day provides the opportunity to encourage commute alternatives to driving alone, promote sustainable lifestyles, and support Oakland's initiatives to bring Bay Area residents back to the premier transit-friendly hub city of the East Bay; and

WHEREAS, Oakland will celebrate its second year of participation in International CarFree Day, making Oakland one of 800 cities observing this event around the world; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: The City of Oakland hereby proclaims Thursday, September 22, 2005 as Oakland CarFree Day to encourage commuters to try available transportation alternatives and to provide visibility to the widespread public desire for the benefits of reduced automobile dependence; and be it

FURTHER RESOLVED: The City will observe CarFree Day by sponsoring a transportation fair in Frank Ogawa Plaza featuring informational booths that promote available and creative alternatives to driving alone; and be it

FURTHER RESOLVED: The City encourages all employers, employees, businesses, public agencies, nonprofit groups, and residents to participate in Oakland CarFree Day 2005.
