Description:

This program is designed to encourage businesses and government facilities in the County to re-think their business practices in order to reduce their impact on the environment, by conserving energy and water, reducing waste and pollution, recycling and purchasing recycled products, and implementing green building measures.

The Sustainable Business program is founded upon five environmental categories:

1. Energy Conservation
2. Water Conservation
3. Pollution Prevention
4. Solid Waste Reduction
5. Green Building

To become a certified sustainable business, a business must implement measures and practices for at least one category. Each category has a corresponding checklist, with suggested sustainable measures. Businesses can select a designated number of measures on the checklist, or propose their own. The certificate reflects the category icons in which the business has been certified.

Participating businesses will be awarded a distinguishing certificate and a window placard that reflects the categories in which they have been certified. Businesses will receive free marketing on the BERC website, at community events, and in BERC advertising. There will also be recognition at an awards ceremony in September of each year, highlighting the most noteworthy efforts to reduce pollution and conserve resources.
