Text:
WHEREAS, young people need caring, supportive and consistent adult role models in their lives to encourage their positive development, and
WHEREAS, mentoring is a proven strategy to improve school attendance and academic performance and to reduce violence and substance abuse among young people, and
WHEREAS, Kitsap County has a number of quality mentoring programs that are in need of more mentors to provide friendship and guidance for children and youth, and
WHEREAS, January 2008 has been designated National Mentoring Month with the strong support of President George W. Bush, the US Congress and endorsed by Governor Christine Gregoire and Lieutenant Governor Brad Owen of Washington State, and
WHEREAS, we, the Kitsap County Board of Commissioners, State of Washington, recognize the value of our youth and the tremendous benefits that mentoring provides
NOW, THEREFORE, we hereby endorse and support January 2008 as Kitsap County Youth Mentoring Month and encourage citizen support and involvement in mentoring.
