RESOLUTION NO. 20060810-060
WHEREAS, the City of Austin's community owned electric utility, Austin Energy, is a national leader in promoting and using environmentally friendly renewable energy; and,
WHEREAS, Austin Energy's Green Building Program is the nationally recognized industry leader and has, for more than a decade, helped foster energy conservation and green building principles throughout the Austin community; and,
WHEREAS, Council approved the United Nations Environmental Accords in May 2005, featuring the suggested action of reducing the City's peak electrical load by 10 percent through energy efficiency and conservation measures; and,
WHEREAS, homes in the City's building code jurisdiction could be built energy efficient enough to be net-zero energy homes with the addition of on-site generation, preferably renewable generation such as solar photovoltaics;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN:
That the City Manager is directed to create a task force to develop a plan for consideration by Council that by 2015 all new single-family homes be built as "Zero Energy Capable Homes."
